About the Greenhouse
The Armstrong Biology Department Greenhouse is 28' wide x 54' long. The greenhouse supplies living plant materials to support many of the Biology Department laboratory courses, including General Biology, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, and Horticulture. Each semester, students who desire to develop their skills in plant care and cultivation participate in our Greenhouse Internship Program. Our interns receive advanced training and gain valuable experience in all aspects of maintaining our living plant collection.
The greenhouse was purchased in 2002 and received a new cover (8mm twinwall polycarbonate) in June 2014. The roof of the structure is draped with 67% shade cloth in the back of the growing area and 38% shade cloth in the front. The growing space is cooled by a combination of exhaust fans located on either side of the front door, which pull hot air out of the greenhouse, and an evaporate cooling system installed in the rear endwall.
